Cody Rhodes comments on Gunther calling him secondary champion

Cody Rhodes gives Gunther credit, but says the World Heavyweight Championship is still in its infancy.

Ahead of their matchup at WWE Crown Jewel, World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has called WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes a secondary champion compared to him.

In an interview with Cathy Kelley that WWE posted on their YouTube channel, Cody Rhodes was asked about Gunther’s comments.

“Obviously the World Heavyweight Championship is of great importance,” Rhodes said. “The championship is still in its infancy. I think Gunther can get into people’s shoes very well. You can’t have me. That’s not a line I shy away from in the slightest. (The WWE Title) is the North Star of our company, and I feel lucky to have it. I appreciate Gunther’s vision. I think he is the only one with that vision.”

Cody Rhodes on possible loss of Gunther

Rhodes was also asked to comment on what would happen if he lost to Gunther. He noted that this would have a bigger effect on WWE than people realized. However, Rhodes expressed confidence that he would win.

“You go into everything with the confidence that you will win. However, say you are right. Suppose Gunther wins and leaves Crown Jewel, that will have a much bigger effect on WWE than I think people realize. The WWE title is the title that the company holds. So if I were to lose at Crown Jewel, we’re looking at a situation where (it’s), ‘Who’s the most important WrestleMania?’ Who will win the Royal Rumble, what title do they want? It’s probably clearer now which title they would like.

“That gives me an incredible amount of stress, because I’ve experienced that, because you don’t want to be the one who devalues the most valuable thing in the game. But I don’t think that will be the case.”

WrestleZone will cover WWE Crown Jewel as it airs on November 2.
