Yankees superstar Ace opts out of deal; Will New York keep him?

The New York Yankees’ biggest story this season was always going to be about whether they will re-sign Juan Soto (and for good reason). Another story that may be just as important for the future of the Yankees is what happens with star player Gerrit Cole’s contract.

The first part of figuring this out came about on November 2, when ESPN baseball insider Kiley McDaniel wrote on agreement void the opt-out by adding one year and $36 million to the four years and $144 million Cole had left under his deal.”

While it may be shocking to some fans that Cole is opting out of his contract, it was predicted by many insiders that he would do so, and the move is a wise financial decision on his part that does not necessarily indicate a desire to leave the Yankees.

Cole’s failure to cover first base (which culminated in New York’s defensive meltdown and resulting five-run slide) in the disastrous 5th inning of Game 5 of the World Series would have left a bad taste in fans’ mouths left behind when it comes to their ace and 2023 AL Cy Young Winner of the award.

However, without Cole, the Yankees probably wouldn’t have even made it to the World Series. This is why the assumption is that New York’s front office will choose to void the opt-out that McDaniel’s post mentioned, which will keep Cole in pinstripes through the 2029 season.

Therefore, Yankees fans shouldn’t feel dismayed if Cole opts out of his deal. Not yet, at least.
