Matchday schedule

Arkansas football game day guide

Notes:

Fayetteville, Arkansas, has not been a hospitable location for Ole Miss football. The Rebels are just 2-13 all-time there, with the wins coming in 2000 and 2008. Ole Miss’ last two road wins against the Hogs have come in Little Rock, and the team is 0-2 on the road against Arkansas in the Kiffin era as the home team has won its last five games, a trend the Rebels hope to reverse this weekend.

“We’ve had a lot of tough games against them over time, before me and since we’ve been here,” Kiffin said. “We should have a very good week of practice and do a very good job in all areas, especially now that it looks like there will be rainy weather on the road. This is going to be a very good challenge for us, a challenge that we are happy to take on. excited about it.”

— Ole Miss sophomore defensive back Suntarine Perkins was named the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week for games ending Oct. 26, as announced Tuesday by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Perkins was part of an SEC sweep of this week’s Walter Camp award, joining Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, who won the offensive award. The Walter Camp National Player of the Week Award is the nation’s longest-running weekly award in its 21st year overall. Perkins is now the fifth recipient of the weekly Walter Camp Award in Ole Miss history, as well as the first Rebels defenseman to ever win.

— On paper, Arkansas and Ole Miss are pretty evenly matched on the offensive side of the ball. The Rebels (39.5 PPG, 538.1 YPG) are better than the Razorbacks (33.3 PPG, 482.5 YPG) in scoring and total yards, while the Hogs are stronger on third down attempts (48.6% vs. 44.0%) and sacks allowed per game (2.1 vs. 2.3). Ole Miss is doing much better defensively as the Rebels rank first in scoring allowed (11.0), first in rush defense (76.6 yards allowed per game) and second in sacks per game (4,3). Arkansas’ strongest metric is its rush defense, allowing 119.9 yards per game (37th).

— Ole Miss leads or ties the FBS in six defensive categories, including scoring defense (11.0), rushing defense (76.6 YPG) and tackles for loss (81). The Rebels averaged 10.1 TFL for 43.0 yards lost per game.

— Arkansas running back Braylen Russell earned his first career start against Mississippi State, recording his first 100-yard rushing game (175 yards). He became the first Arkansas freshman to rush for more than 175 yards in a game since Darren McFadden in 2005.

— Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart leads the SEC in seven categories and is one win short of becoming Ole Miss’ modern QB leader in wins at 24-9. Dart (10,243 yards) is 236 yards away from passing Bo Wallace as Ole Miss’ all-time offensive leader.

What they said:

— “I just thought he was so physical and played so hard. He got hurt in last year’s game at Ole Miss and I felt like there was a difference when he played there and he was a difference maker. He’s been great for us and I like the energy he plays with. I discussed it today. He needs to make better penalty decisions at the end, but he plays very hard and is a great teammate.” — Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin on former Arkansas linebacker Pooh Paul, now the Rebels’ leading tackler

— “We’ve got to do a great job containing (Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green). The man is as talented and as tall as they come. We’re going to have to do whatever he’s trying to do, rush really well and contain him and have a really good plan. (Arkansas offensive coordinator) Coach (Bobby) Petrino has done a great job offensively and given people a lot of problems. We played him last year (at Texas A&M) and he did well against us. This is a very well-coached team. A year ago they made major defensive improvements in their first year with a new defensive staff and they are doing a great job.” –Kiffin

– “He’s a good player, a big guy. He has some similarities with Tre. We normally see receivers like that. We’re just going to work on our technique, do our job, execute our assignments and limit him.” — Ole Miss safety John Saunders Jr., on Arkansas wide receiver Andrew Armstrong

— “I think it’s a lot of fun. We’ve had four games now and the first one was of course the Hudson Clark, three picks and seven turnovers. The next one was I went for two and we didn’t make it. The next year come we qualified for bowling and we dominated that match from the start. They came back at us in the second half. Last year’s match was certainly a tight match four games were very competitive and I expect the same kind of situation on Saturday.” — Arkansas coach Sam Pittman, on the recent rivalry with Ole Miss

— “Well, sometimes it doesn’t depend on who you’re playing, matchups, health of your team. But I think we’re pretty healthy right now. We’ve got three in a row at home. We’re not worried about the second and third, but we have three in a row at home. I think it’s just the way we prepare. We don’t cut a ton this week, just a few minutes of practice, trying to secure our legs if we’re there, make sure we bring the right guys to the party. We’re very aware of that. In the past, we’ve been very good in the bye weeks and we’ve obviously been beaten by LSU, so we’. We’re aware that this week is so important to us and then we’re aware that there’s a goodbye to come. So we’re taking a little bit off of it to make sure we’re fresh, but it’s all running about preparation. As you’ve seen in college football, I think most games are decided by who turns the ball over and who doesn’t. I think it’s always been that way, but this year it seems like you’re winning the battle for revenue, and I’m not sure it matters what the names of the teams are. So we really need to focus on that. Obviously, I think we’re 5-0 in games where we’ve tied or won the turnover battle, and we’re 0-3 when we’ve lost. That’s what we’re going to emphasize this week.” – Pittman, on the up-and-down nature of his team’s season
