Farmington Hills man feels ‘humbled’ after winning $5 million in Mega Millions

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI. – A Farmington Hills man woke up in the middle of the night to discover he had won $5 million playing Mega Millions.

Tyrone Fergerson, 53, matched the five white balls on September 24, 2024 to win a $1 million prize. The numbers were: 01-06-10-23-27. Because he had the Megaplier, his prize was multiplied to $5 million.

“I play Mega Millions once a week and I always play this series of songs that consist of special dates,” said Fergerson. “I woke up in the middle of the night, so I decided to check my ticket. I said a prayer and then looked up the winning numbers. I recognized them immediately and was at a loss for words when I saw that I had won not $1 million, but $5 million! All I can say is that winning is incredible and I feel humbled and grateful!”

He purchased his winning ticket at the Chill Box Convenience Store, located at 29801 West 9 Mile Road in Farmington Hills.

“Being told you’ve won $5 million in the middle of the night is something lottery players dream about, and for Mr. Fergerson it became a reality,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “Congratulations to Tyrone, Michigan’s newest millionaire – thanks to the Michigan Lottery’s Mega Millions game!”

Fergerson recently visited the Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim his prize. He said he plans to provide for his family with his winnings.

When are Mega Millions drawings?

Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 PM Eastern Time, 10:00 PM Central Time, 9:00 PM Mountain Time, and 8:00 PM Pacific Time. The drawings are held at WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia.

How do you play Mega Millions?

Each Mega Millions game costs $2. For an additional $1 per game, players can add a “Megaplier” that can multiply non-jackpot prizes up to five times.

Five white balls are drawn from a set of balls numbered 1 to 70 and one gold Mega Ball is drawn from a set of balls numbered 1 to 25.

You win if the numbers on one row of your ticket match the numbers of the balls drawn on that date. There are nine ways to win a prize, from $2 to the jackpot.

If no one wins the jackpot, the money will be added to the jackpot for the next drawing. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands. They can be purchased online at MichiganLottery.com or at any of the state’s 10,500 retailers until 10:45 p.m. on the day of the drawing.

Do the numbers on the ticket have to be in the same order as the numbers drawn?

No! The order in which the numbers are drawn does not matter. The numbers on your ticket are always displayed in numerical order.

What is the Megaplier?

Most states use a Megaplier® feature that allows players to increase non-jackpot winnings by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times. In a participating state, you can play the Megaplier for an additional $1. Any non-jackpot prize you win during a Mega Millions® game will be multiplied by the Megaplier number drawn if you have purchased the Megaplier feature.
