Fayette County in playoffs after Fultondale loses

Fayette County football is in the Class 4A playoffs as Fultondale forfeits three games after violating the AHSAA transfer rule.

The AHSAA announced Wednesday evening that Fultondale forfeited three games: wins over Fayette County (38-7), Hamilton (62-42) and Cordova (42-6).

Fayette County had finished fifth in the 4A, Region 5 standings and out of the playoff race. The Tigers’ season seemed over with an inactive date last Friday.

Fultondale was originally ranked No. 3 in 4A, Region 5 and was scheduled to face Central Florence in the first round on Nov. 8. Now it drops to No. 6 in the standings and will no longer make the playoffs. Hamilton took its place as the No. 3 seed in the region, while Fayette County slid to the No. 4 seed.

Prior to the forfeit, the Tigers were 4-6. They thought their season was over. That changed on Wednesday evening, after which the Tigers finished at 5-5.

“I’m trying to get all my kids out of basketball and into football mode,” Fayette County coach Jared Porter told The Tuscaloosa News. “… We’re going from Halloween (Thursday) to ‘Hey, we’re going to be on the practice field.'”

Porter said he heard rumors earlier this week that the Fultondale was under investigation. That information was confirmed by the AHSAA announcement.

“I told the coaches this might be something this young group needed,” Porter said. “When I say young, seven seniors, they’re not all starting, starting a lot of freshmen and sophomores. They have nothing to lose. The seniors have already cried and played their last game. They just have to play, have fun.”

Fayette County will travel to West Morgan in the first round on Friday, November 8. The Tigers are making their third straight playoff appearance under Porter.

Fultondale violated the AHSAA’s transfer policy by playing an ineligible player, the AHSAA said in its news release. The three games the Wildcats forfeited were all won games in which the ineligible player participated. In addition to the forfeits, Fultondale was fined and placed on probation.
