‘Star Wars’ meets ‘The Goonies’ in the new ‘Skeleton Crew’ trailer

Star Wars goes back to the ’80s with its latest series on Disney+. The new trailer for Skeleton crew reveals that star Jude Law will be joined by a group of adventure-seeking kids whose can-do attitude is reminiscent of the child characters from ’80s classics of all ages, such as The Goonies And ANDnot to mention the contemporary tributes Stranger things.

These kids come from a planet that looks downright suburban. Especially compared to the deserts of Tatooine or the skyscrapers of Coruscant, this planet would look great in an Earth-based Steven Spielberg movie. They even get lectured by their parents for breaking the rules, but that doesn’t stop them from finding a spaceship buried in the nearby forest. The biggest surprise of all is that the spaceship is actually functional and takes them all into hyperspace on an unexpected adventure.

Initially, the children encounter some kind of space station. At first everything seems fine, until their use of Old Republic credits earns them unwanted attention. That’s when Law’s Jod Na Nawood steps in and promises some much-needed help.

“I’m taking you home,” he says, blaster in hand. “We are entering into a partnership. But we must act quickly!”

So far, Skeleton crew seems to have a minimal number of lightsabers and Force users. But there are plenty of other sci-fi dangers to contend with.

“Be warned of booby traps, pirates and mountains where no one dares go,” says a spiky droid.

To counter these dangers, children will have to learn skills they didn’t even know they had. Most of the group looks human, but one has more of an elephant’s face; he could be an Ortolan, like iconic drummer Max Rebo. His name is Neel, and for a kid he seems pretty good at piloting a spaceship.

Skeleton crew was created by screenwriter Chris Ford and Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts (who may explain why Destin is replacing Daniel Cretton Watts as director of the next Tom Holland Spider Man film). But besides Watts, Skeleton crew features an all-star line-up of directors such as Everything everywhere at once Oscar winners Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert; The Green Knight filmmaker David Lowery; Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung, who also worked on a season 3 episode The Mandalorian; Beef‘Jake Schreier; and Bryce Dallas Howard, who directed three Mandalorian episodes and an EP of Boba Fett’s Book.
