People who live nearby said they heard it.

“This is a very busy area in the downtown area, and at four in the morning it is actually not that early, because I know some people have already started commuting to work,” said Vivian Gu, who lived near the crime scene works.

“(It’s) a little concerning,” said Roland Jones, who lives near the scene. “I work very close to that scene. And obviously I have kids around, so that’s not something I want to see when I wake up.”

Police from both Yale and New Haven responded to the scene.

“It’s clearly a very disturbing situation, especially when a young person is in critical condition,” New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said. “Someone who has his whole life ahead of him.”

Pedestrians were asked to avoid the area.

Road closures were in place and commuters were advised to seek alternative routes.
