Eversource installs the latest electric meter technology in Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Starting in 2025, Eversource will begin installing smart meters in homes and businesses to read electricity usage.

This latest technology provides customers with detailed information about their energy consumption and power outage warnings. Additionally, Eversource will be able to detect power outages in real time with information about the location of the outage, helping to speed power restoration outside of major storms.

Eversource calls for an increase in natural gas rates in Massachusetts

A smart meter is a digital electricity meter with wireless communication that sends information to Eversource equipment and systems.

“Upgrading to smart meters is like replacing an old flip phone with a smartphone,” said Eversource Senior Vice President of Customer Operations, Digital Strategy and Chief Customer Officer Jared Lawrence. “In addition to providing our team with information that we can use to reduce the duration of power outages for our customers, smart meters will enable our customers to monitor their energy consumption in near real time, including how they use energy, how much they consume and peak usage times during the day, allowing them to take steps to reduce their energy consumption and bills.”

The transition to smart meters for all Eversource electric customers in Massachusetts is expected to take approximately three years. Installation will start in Western Mass. in the second half of 2025. Customers will be informed several times in advance about the work to install their new smart meter.
