Modern Sepak Takraw, or Takraw for short (also known as Kick Volleyball), began in Malaysia and is now their national sport. It combines elements of Soccer, Footbag, Volleyball, Baseball, Badminton, Gymnastics and the ancient sport of Sepak Raga.  “Sepak” is the Malay word for kick and “takraw” is the Thai word for a woven ball, therefore sepak takraw quite literally means to kick ball. The choosing of this name for the sport was essentially a compromise between Malaysia and Thailand, the two powerhouse countries of the sport.

The sepak takraw ball is made of synthetic fiber or one woven layer with 12 holes and 20 intersections.

Sepak Takraw at Ultra Sports Centre

While the sport is not widely known, there are in fact many who play Takraw in Canada and the Sepak Takraw Association of Canada (STAC) is a great place to get information. Ultra Sports Centre has two hard courts with professional netting and balls available, and is the ideal place for both Takraw pros and those looking to try it out for the first time. We will be offering Sepak Takraw Leagues this winter, starting in January. Contact us for more information on how to sign up.

Finally, here’s a great video of somebody being introduced to Takraw for the first time.
